Calculate ideal body weight with the Devine formula, plus adjusted body weight — clinical references used by dietitians.
Enter your details above to see your result.
The Devine formula estimates ideal body weight (IBW) from height and sex. Adjusted body weight (AdjBW = IBW + 0.25 × (actual − IBW)) is used in clinical nutrition when actual weight is well above IBW, e.g. for some energy and protein calculations. These are reference estimates, not targets for any individual.
| Component | Value |
|---|---|
| Men, base (at 5 ft) | 50 kg |
| Women, base (at 5 ft) | 45.5 kg |
| Per inch over 5 ft | +2.3 kg |
We use the Devine formula: a base of 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) for the first 152 cm (5 ft) of height, plus 2.3 kg for each additional inch. 'Ideal' here is a clinical reference point, not a personal target.

IBW is a reference weight estimated from height and sex — here via the Devine formula. It's a clinical starting point (e.g. for some medication and nutrition calculations), not a personal goal weight.
Adjusted body weight = IBW + 0.25 × (actual − IBW). Dietitians use it when actual weight is well above IBW, so energy and protein estimates aren't skewed by excess adipose tissue.
Not necessarily — IBW is a population reference, not a target for any individual. A healthy weight depends on body composition, health, and goals; discuss with a dietitian or clinician.
NutraPlanner turns targets like these into branded meal plans for your clients — or yourself.
